I find it very beneficial to approach the judge after a show to ask questions about not just my birds but other I competed with. Just wondering how many others also do this and how do you find the judges react to your questions.

Yep I would defiantly approach a judge and ask heaps of questions and they should have no problem with answering as its part of their job.

Approaching the judge for inforamtion is a good source of information. Warning don't rely on this information as being the be all and end all. As in all you read and hear take time to ponder their comments.

I have heard some very funny things from judges, but some good tips. I started showing at twelve :)

Some judges can feel unconfortable when being questioned about their decisions, don't push too hard. Remember that it is only the judges opinion on that day, things change and we all have differnet opinions.

I find fellow breeders are often the best source of information, and let the judge do what he has been asked to do.

If you ask a judge about your birds just remember that they may not always be right. I have seen far too many ppl who are beginners discard birds that a judge has said they are no good.

The best person to ask for advice is someone who has the same breed and always wins at shows.

I went to a show on sunday and the judge said my pit game bantam cockerel was duck heeled. I asked him if he knew what that was and he said his back toe lifts off the ground a bit.

Now, someone new to the fancy would of listened to that judges comments and discarded their bird.

I know what duck heeled is so i didnt pay any attention to his comments. If he was duck heeled then he shouldnt of won reserve bird in show.

This has happened many times.

I will be going along to all the shows I can this year and I will try to catch the judges to learn what I can but I understand its just their opinion on the day

I have asked the question to a judge of 'why did this one beat that one' and I have to say most times I get a good response so it is worth asking

Most poultry judges are also teachers and most will be happy to answer any questions you have, all you need do is ask nicely

In my experience I have always found the judges great so helpful but yes I think its the way you approach them that makes all the difference
