By far the best book on this topic is:

The Genetics of Chicken Colours by Sigrid van Dort - David Hancox and Friends

http://www.chickencolours.com/

I think its largely out of print, but there may be a few copies knocking about here and there.

Having not heard of it, I Googled the book title. There was even a site in the first few results where you could download it as an eBook for free. Illegally perhaps as it seems to cost over $200 new and you're unlikely to pick it up under $100 used (according to Amazon.com).

It is over 700 pages and should therefore be a very long read. At that length, I'd expect it contains detailed information.

As for the one recommended by Andrewschooks, it is shorter -- around 250pp I think ?? -- but may contain as much useful information as the longer one. ... or it may not.

I have been told by more than one person that there are a few mistakes in the ‘The Genetics of Chicken Colours’ but as I have not read it I cant comment further regards the book

The Muir book is a technical tome aimed at scientists and breeders of utility traits. The van Dort book is much more useful for breeders looking at chicken colours as the title suggests. Yes there are a couple of very minor errors in it. But they are not a big deal.

I like the fact its 700 ++ pages more comprehensive than the little books. I had heard it was very good for chickens and has the best information on genetics but that was from a fella from overseas so I was hoping someone here had read it. I don't want to buy a book that has a few mistakes so I will give that other one mentioned a miss. I think I will just buy the Muir book and than I can give a review for you all. Thank you to everyone that offered advice I do appreciate that

Swift get yourself a copy of R. D. Crawford’s Poultry Breeding and Genetics. I have read all the so called genetic books including the one by van Dort and crawfords is still way better.

Have a read here- http://books.google.com.au/books?hl=en& ... &q&f=false
