JACKIE FRENCH'S CHOOK BOOK
New softcover book, 198 pages. Revised and expanded edition published 2010

Jackie French loves chooks:

There's nothing more beautiful than a mob of White Leghorns like sailing ships flying with the wind, comfortable Australorps in their fluffy black knickers dedicatedly sifting through the old tomato bed for insects and titbits, or a tribe of Isa Reds scratching under the lavender. There's no sound as domestic, either, as a mob of chooks clucking in the backyard. It gives you a feeling of safety and security.

Read this book and you'll love chooks too. You'll love to keep them, scratching about in your own backyard, and you'll love to eat them, prepared from one of the many mouth-watering chicken-and-egg recipes you'l find between in this great little book. This completely revised edition's sections on poultry keeping and management have been greatly updated and expanded, and are now illustrated with close to 100 cull corour photosgraphs.

Everything you want to know about chooks, from choosing and keeping them to breeding them and eating them and their eggs. Suggests a myriad of uses for chook by-products including feather mattresses, quill pens, soap, shampoo and fertilizer. Includes over 100 recipes and an extensive index.

Chapters include:

I Love Chooks
Choosing and Breeding Chooks
Keeping Chooks
Chook Safety, Health and Other Problems
Chook Questions
Chook Extras
Eating Chooks
Eating Eggs

This is a super book and I highly recommend it

Extraordinary Chickens and Extra Extraordinary Chickens are books by photographer Stephen Green-Armytage. They are great for the coffee table as the photos of the various breeds are eyecatching.

There is also a new English magazine out called Your Chickens that a friend has been sending from overseas to the children who enjoy the stories published and dream of the coops that are available there!

The Good Life Book Club offer a variety of books from poultry to organic gardening.

Happy reading!

Sadly, a lot of my chook books and magazines are either English or American, though the advice their offer is good, some of it is not applicable to Australia and its climate and conditions.

I do have a good book for n00bs titled "Keeping Chickens An Australian Guide", I also have Jackie French's "Chook Book" and "Chook Wisdom" and one of my favourite books is called "Zen and the Art of Raising Chickens".
