More Chook Wisdom

Just picked up a copy from the local library.

It has some great garden layout designs that incorporate the chook run, veggie patch and fruit trees, also instructions for a chook tractor and broody box nursery and lots of helpful tips a_bravo.gif

Marley and Me By John Grogan, though this book is about a Labrador, there is a whole chapter Poultry on Parade dedicated to chooks.

Here are some of my favourite quotes from the book:

“Animal lovers are a special breed of humans, generous of spirit, full of empathy, perhaps a little prone to sentimentality, and with hearts as big as a cloudless sky”

“He taught us the art of unqualified love. How to give it, how to accept it. Where there is that, most other pieces fall into place.”

“Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day.”

“We now had three girls and one testosterone-pumped guy bird that spent every walking minute doing of of three things: pursuing s.., having s.. or crowing boastfully about the s.. he had just scored. Jenny observed that roosters are what men would be if left to their own devices, with no social conventions to rein in their baser instincts, and I couldn't disagree. I had to admit, I kind of admired the lucky b......”

"Chicken Coops for the Soul A Hen Keeper's Story", Julia Hollander combines facts, associated chook trivia and the author's own personal journey in hen keeping.

"...My chooks have introduced me to a whole new social scene. I had no idea quite how many people kept them in the past – old and young; male and female; rich and poor; it is one of the few activities in this country that still managers to transcend social barriers. I find conversations about chickens are great ice breaker, whether out shopping, at a party or at the school gate. Finding that your companion is one of the chicken crowd brings a conspiratorial smile to both your faces..." Chicken Coops for the Soul A Hen Keeper's Story, Julia Hollander

Building Chickens Coops For Dummies

Excellent book with in depth descriptions of tools, hardware etc needed and the pros and cons of them and constructive advice in all planning, purchasing, construction and post construction advice. There are detailed coop plans for all levels of experience. The book however uses US terminology and US imperial measurements.

Highly recommended.

Building the Poultry Penthouse
by Gerry Bolla and Barry Rees

Has eggscellent materials list and step by step construction instructions and photos, only problem is, that personally I don't think that 12-15 hens full time or up 25 hens sleeping as stated in the books introduction, eggstract below, would be very comfortable in the penthouse, even for bantams. Two to three hens and three to four bantams at most would co habitat in the penthouse with access to a pen and free ranging.

"The 'Penthouse' will comfortably house 12-15 hens full time. If birds are let out daily to free-range the 'Penthouse' can hold up to 25 birds, sleeping on the slatted floor at night. The 'Penthouse' will need to be securely closed at night to keep out foxes."
