I'm quoting my dear wife who works at a public school in a much lower ( read : welfare dependant) housing area.
"The money we get is enough, it's conditions we need. If we could just get the resources for the kids in need, that would help immensely. If the parents just don't care, the kids won't. If they can't afford the basic things like books and pencils - then we need funding for that. I'm sick of buying dozens of exercise books and pencils every year when the parents see that cigarettes, alcohol, and lotto are a higher priority for them"

teaching isn't a job, it's a calling. The hours involved are extraordinary. Sure, they see the kids between 8.30 and 3, but they are at school from 7 til 5 ( my wife is) and then up til usually midnight and all day Sunday doing marking, planning, and preparation.
How much $ would YOU want for a 17 hour day, total of nearly 100 hour week? Holidays? yep....10wks a year in total, but half of that spent at school doing inservicing, sterilising the lego, blocks, desks, carpet.
I couldn't handle the stress myself - someone would die (probably some feral parent) and i'd be in jail. Everything gets stolen: phone, books, pens, Ipads, laptops, LUNCH, icon_gaah! - even some of the teachers have lost CARS to ex students! Your car gets destroyed in the carpark by uncaring kids and parents who shouldn't be parking in the carpark - so we keep using a 20yo lancer that looks like it's been in a hailstorm...but not, - just carpark damage.
Yeah sure...it's a great job. My wife threatens to quit every week....but we like eating. If this gets any worse, I'll have to go back to work! [smilie=a_holycrap.gif]

All teachers should be sacked and all libraries closed as both are a waste of time and money

So your Grandma's a legend....is she available to teach every other kid? I was 4 when my grandma died. I hated school, but made friends for life there.

-let's be reasonable for a tic, my wife teaches part time and puts her heart and soul into it. So by your broad comment she should be sacked? Why would we close all libraries? My family and I actually enjoy reading and don't fully trust the internet for facts even when i can get full and reliable internet access.
I certainly don't believe a lot of what i read online, although i readily concede that the internet is usually more up to date.
We all need to learn, and 99.9% of us will need to go to school for learn the basics and more and more so these days the socialisation needed to get along with others, to learn to shrug off negative behaviour, bullying, and learn empathy for others.Too many kids have no siblings to learn to share with...someone outside the home is often the one they turn to.

If you're serious,I'd be happy as' to chat to you about kids with special needs, teenagers, fostering and overseas adoption(kids who had NO education). I've got/ done it all..no, I'm no legend...far from it ...we just love kids. If nothing else, please don't criticise all teachers for the sins of some.

Thanks,
Andrew
