After 4 trouble-free years with our girls we have had two night-time fox attacks resulting in the death of Henny and injuries to Penny and Lucinda. Thankfully both are responding to treatment but I am scared to put them out in the pen again. The coop is now double wired with heavy mesh, completely covered both top and bottom, with an electric wire just above ground level. On the first attack the fox tore off the chicken wire stapled to a wooden fence. On the second (after improvements) it chewed through single cover chicken wire.

Previously the girls have happily free-ranged on our five acres during the day but I don't think I could let them out now unless I was supervising. It is sad as they had such a happy life.

At the moment they are in a large cage inside recuperating. Our neighbour is also experiencing fox attacks.

Fox lights & a device that emits a fox repellent sound have been suggested. Anyone know if these things work?

Sorry for your loss - I've had losses this month too. My boss bred goats and says the fox lights work. My birds were attacked around dawn. Good luck, it's awful losing birds to foxes.

Sorry for to read about the fox attacks, foxes seem to be in abundance this season, they are getting bolder and even attacking during the day time, so a fox light during the day would have very little effect.

Maremmas are great guard dogs, especially if you have 5 acres and proper fencing.

I have 3 fox lights that are solar powered and they have worked better then I did expect. I have not lost a fowl to a fox since the light were installed

Thank you all for your kind replies. Where do you obtain fox lights from? Our local farm store has never heard of them.
