Thanks guys. I have not handled him as yet (scary beak!). That's my task tomorrow, not sure how tame he actually is. He puts his head down for when I say "scratch, scratch" but when I go to scratch he turns to bite! I'll perservere and see if I can handle without the loss of too many fingers.

Will also look into PBFD.

Linda, you may find he is very sensitive because of the skin, try catching him with a towel first that way you'll keep your fingers. My longbill is very tame, can be sat on a stand, cuddled and kissed and scratched but hates being caught and that is about the only time he bites.

I can understand that for a bird to be caught must be like their greatest fear of being eaten

I bit the bullet, donned by driza-abone, safety glasses and akubra and went in. Hand fed him some veges, then he let me pat his back and wings, but not his head. Baby steps. I truly believe it is bad habit now, no signs of PBFD on beak or claws.

Most 'pet cockatoos' are and some in very small cages

I'm presuming he was in a small cage. He was found on a fence in town and given to me. Also doesn't like men (attacks my husband through the cage, but I can walk in a pet him), so guess he didn't have that good a life. Also note that he does not even attempt to fly or jump in the aviary I have him in. If he can't reach something by climbing, then he doesn't go there.
