Just to make things clear, so far only pigeons have been affected, not other bird species, though different paramyxoviruses can infect a variety of bird species. The one most feared is Newcastle's Disease, which is not involved in this current outbreak. |

http://new.dpi.vic.gov.au/agriculture/p ... geon-virus As of 21 September 2011, DPI has placed 36 premises under quarantine, all where PMV1 has been confirmed. PMV1 has been detected in both racing pigeons and fancy pigeons. No poultry or wild birds have tested positive. There are currently no confirmed unusual disease events in either commercial or backyard poultry flocks, nor in wild birds. The outbreak appears to be confined to the Greater Melbourne area and Shepparton/Tatura. Movement of infected birds is the principal method by which the disease is spreading. Irresponsible movement of pigeons risks introducing the disease to new properties where it may kill the majority or all of the pigeons. If all people stop moving pigeons for four to six weeks, it is possible that the disease will burn out. map of outbreak locations. http://new.dpi.vic.gov.au/__data/assets ... p-2011.jpg |

ban on movement was lifted end Oct other states may not have had this bit on thier 'Nightly News' = we all know how the other states dont exist when it comes to daily news items = only the really 'dramatic' or serious ones get told outside of the state they happen in = example = only heard last night about how very serious the NSW floods are!! (off topic so no one comment on that here = is only an example of how badly things are reported between states) many chook owners made the decision not to move their birds around while this was going on = I think that was a wise choice = erring on the side of caution - but all seems to have settled with no more outbreaks reported |
