We pair bronze to red all the time for improved colour and type and the bronze hold well |

Gilla I have 3 poults to 1 tom but you can even go more its not a good idea only having 1 to 1 the poult can really suffer. As for the colour its a good idea to always use Red Bronze to Bourbon Red its the only way to get a descent outcome for colour |

I've also been gradually building up my flock of turkeys, and adding new varieties each year. Attached is a photo of my 2012 Bourbon Red breeders. The gobbler is dark, but the hens weren't so good. Our breeding season in the north is just beginning, so we'll see what 2013 brings. Turkeys are a great source of joy and constant surprises! PS Thanks for the tip on resizing photos - it works!

Thanks for sharing the photo Topender, the depth of colour and markings are impressive. My hens are always a bit lighter than the toms, and your hens are still a good shade. Can I ask where you sourced your original BRs from? And do you sell eggs? I assume you live in northern Qld? Sorry I can't pm you, and I don't think you can pm me either. |

Thanks for the pm Topender, I was unable to reply, but you sourced your BRs from the same place that I have been trying to get eggs from for a few years. Each season there is a hiccup. As they are such a small population, and we can't easily import more if we run out, it is up to hobbyists to keep them going. I know that people try to recreate good BRs with existing reds crossed with Bronzes and so forth. I'd love to see photos from other breeders. Also has anyone a copy of the Australian Standard for Bourbon Red variety of turkeys? |
