Are chuckers hard to keep? do they eat the same as pheasants? how much room do they need?

Chucker partridge are very easy to keep and breed no different to quails in many ways. Chuckers are part of the pheasant family so you treat them the same as pheasants and feed them the same diet. 1 pair can be kept in a cage 3 x 3 meters with some ground cover like small shrubs and rocks.

All sorts really but they are all native shrubs like mini bottle brush and grevillea [did I spell that right] and native grass too

I have only had my Chukars 2 years and am interested if others have their go broody, as none of mine have ever appeared at all broody. I have about 10 females and 6 males in a pen 15m x 2m with 10 Bob White Quail and they get along fine. I had a broody Bob White last year which would run out of her nest an attack me if I went within about 2 m of her nest.

If you want the hen to go broody and raise her own you need to keep them in pairs only, in groups the hens usually just drop the eggs all over the place because they keep on the move so try pairing off 1 pair in a separate cage and you should find she will go broody

Thanks for that info. I would like to see one of my Chukars raise chicks one day.

70% of my eggs are laid in a nest and the rest can be anywhere. I dont need broodies as I incubate the eggs, I was just surprised I have never had one.

I use incubators as I get so many more chicks per year that way
