We have them wild on the farm here and they are a pain when I need to mow as they swoop all the time

Just interesting to read the thread on the plovers...
I think they are the most fascinating birds and they usually make a lot of noise at night (mostly on a full moon) to warn against predators...If they are diving you are probably very very close to their nests and babies which are unbelievably open and unprotected.
Just in the middle of an open paddock on the ground with no indication of a nest untill you look really hard and still very hard to see.
Their youngsters have a very low survival rate as they are easy to see as babies....
Hope this is of some help in understanding these beutifull birds.
I have seen parents feign a broken wing to draw predators away from their babies, as soon as you or a predator begins to approach they will draw either away from their young and simply fly away...
Having these birds around usually indicates a good healthy environment so keep that in mind as well

I've found that they will swoop you but not usually make contact, they will tend to veer away at the last moment, not like bloody magpies that just continue on and take a gouge out of your head.
