I was looking at getting some jap quails, so I checked with my local produce agency if they stock a game food. Only have turkey starter
What they have is Barastoc 'Top layer mash' it has 16.5% protein would this be suitable to feed if the chicks were started on chick/turkey starter.

Yep that will be ok if you can get turkey grower crumble at some stage that would be better. Also mix in a little finch mix for added vitamins ect.. and boiled egg if you can.

This is the mash below, looks ok but the protein should be a little higher for quail chicks but if you feed them a little boiled egg and finch seed they should be fine

Thanks for that, all I can get is turkey starter, Riverina brand, but it says not to feed to any other poultry.

Thanks also for the dpi link, very helpful

I feed mine turkey starter and small seed mixed together [i perfer budgie mix] for the adults and turkey starter for the chicks to first molt at 8 weeks. Don't forget some greens and seeding grass when its growing they love the seed heads.

Sunflower is also good but only a little and sprouted seed is really good for both the chicks and parents

Turkey starter has Lasalocid sodium to aid in the control of coccidiosis
Chick starter also has Lasalocid sodium to aid in the control of coccidiosis
So I see no difference between them and chick starter is for chickens so can't see why they can't have the turkey starter? because most use the chick starter with any chick inc quails
