Hi all,

I grew up with various chicken breeds but have no experience with quails...

We've just bought a house in Coburg (Melbourne) and we'd like to set up a little hobby quail coop in the backyard. We don't intend on ever eating them - we just want their eggs and manure for the veggie patch.

My question is this:

We're new to the neighbourhood so we need quiet birds - loud crowing at dawn would not be good. Is there an Australian native breed of quails that would be suitable? What about if we just stick to hens?

I was thinking 2 or 3 birds in a 2 x 2m patch with native grasses and a little hideaway to start.

Thanks for any tips. [smilie=a_withstupid.gif]

Any of the quails would suit from brown quail to jap quail. You could even look at chuckers?

Can't beat the good old King Quail, but you can also try Brown and Stubble Quails. I have never bred those two unfortunately. If you're really cluey and have the aviaries, you try Button Quails, but they are a royal pain in the caboose to breed.

I believe the chicken came first.

Thanks for the tips.

We'll furnish their home over the next few weekends and then see how we go.

I would say either Brown quails or King quails as both are free breeding varieties and you should do well with them
