Does anyone feed live food to their quails? Would it be best to use worms, crickets or white ants?

Hi there,

I've used meal worms before with good success especially when there are babies, readily available from pet shops and once you have them you can breed your own too.

Yep meal worm was my first choice and yep I was looking at breeding some myself. I have read up on white ants but I don't like the idea of bring white ants home. I wonder if crickets would be a problem if they were not eaten fast enough and escaped. Are the worms hard to breed?

Is it imperative they get worms or would the chicks be ok on just seed

The protein in the meal worms is good for the little chicks but if you can't source them then I have used a commercial egg and biscuit mix available from pet shops and added boiled egg to it. The problem with baby quails is the fact they are so small and can't eat large seed so the meal worms and egg and biscuit are easily eaten by them and help with growth/strength.

Live food is super good for quails and not just young ones. It natural for them to eat insects in the wild and that hasn't been lost with aviary breeding

I feed em to Keets and not only are they good for them but also help teach them to catch their own live food when there out in the big wide world. Here a link the an orsum topic on breeding them viewtopic.php?f=39&t=7042 they are super easy to breed just make sure you leave enough behind to keep breeding

Hi Guinea,
I agree crickets are great livefood and nutritionally superior to mealworms but cheap?
Are you in an area where there are lots naturally in the wild? O r do you have a cheap breeder you buy them from?
