Can turkeys fly?
We have a chicken pen with 16 hens no rooster and we are toying with the idea of perhaps a pair of turkeys or just two girls not sure yet. Our pen has no roof so I was wondering if I will need to put a roof on it.

Um sorry to be a downer but its not a good idea to keep turkeys and chickens in the same pen in fact you cant keep turkeys on ground that you have run hens on previously. The main reason for this is blackhead and nine times out of time it will KILL your turkeys.

Oh wow I had no idea they couldn't be together I didn't stop to think about health. Can they be in a cage next to chickens or is their a distance they have to be away from each other

As an alternative opinion. I would not worry about blackhead. After having turkeys and chooks together for about 40 year I have never seen it and never seen anyone else have it among my turkey loving friends.

Some basic rules with poultry; feed them well, keep their pens clean, worm them, treat any lice/mites and treat other infections/illnesses quickly and you won't have a problem.
Lots of people don't get turkey's cause they hear about black head and think that their turkeys will drop dead of it right away but I have never heard of it happening that way.

there is medication you can get for black head - and it helps if you feed the correct turkey starter and grower before they get let out full time into a paddock to free range
I personally dont run my turkeys with my chooks as I have the room to keep them seperate. the main reason most dont keep them together is if you get a 'love struck' or a 'narky' Tom he can crush [or stomp as the case may be] a smaller bird aka chook

however chook cross turkey = Mule - they are BUTT UGLY but tasty great - they are also sterile

So can they be in a cage next to chickens or is their a distance they have to be away from each other. I have the room to put a new one next to the chook cage but it would have the be right next to it.

Our chooks and turkeys live together most of the time. A cage beside would be ideal I think. We have the occasional issues with male turkeys trying to mate with chooks an killing them! Turkeys may also hog all the feeders and chase the chooks away as well. Turkeys are big grass eaters and like some time free ranging if possible or at least some access to grazing.

I have both turkeys and various chooks together I have never had any problems with health of either. I do worm them every few months and I do keep the coop clean so that maybe the reason. As far as flying my toms don't fly but the females do but not often
