Yes they are rare and I don't think anyone has any big numbers of them I have 3 only at the time

rare as in number of breeders? or rare as in how many live birds?
it is well known that some breeders have 100s of birds but this is classed as 1 [ one]

Narrangansetts are "critical" according to the Rare Breeds Trust of Australia. For matter of interest, this is determined by the number of remaining purebred breeding birds, not breeders.

good to hear the RBT of OZ go on numbers of birds as most Rare Breed Clubs 9 times out of 10 go on number of breeders only
but as we all know a 'Trust' as opposed to a 'Club' wil always see things differently

Yes I understand that, but all that really matters is how many breeding birds there are at the end of the day. As far as turkeys go, the Rare Breeds Trust is all we can go by.

The Royal Palm turkey has the ng gene in combination with the bl (black winged bronze), so if you wanted to recreate the Narragensett colour you could cross a Royal Palm with a regular Bronze or even a commercial white turkey (which are mainly made on bronze with the addition of the white gene), then intermate the progeny. Some of the next generation poults will have Narragensett markings ~ thats basically a bronzewing with the ng gene.

A Royal Palm boy (b1b1cgcgngng) over a 'regular' Bronze girl (b+b+) should give you Bronze boys and Narragansett girls according to the Porter Turkeys website. I'm still trying to wrap my head around these genetics myself. It gets a little confusing, but according to this dude (he's got tonnes of colours going over there), this is what will result from this cross. I would be interested to see what comes from a RP tom and a White hen (not the BBW). He reckons it will give you the Oregon Grey colour which looks stunning, but I'm wondering if our genetics we have here in our birds is pure enough to get this result. :-?

It really depends on the genetics of your white birds. Backyard strains of white could be anything, but the commercial ones are generally made on bronze.
