Do your turkeys sit and hatch their eggs or do you take them away and let a chicken hatch the eggs? The fella I got mine from recommended I put the eggs under a chicken but didn't tell me why?

Turkeys have a reputation as being terrible mothers. They seem to hatch them fine but they will stand on their poults or take them wandering off in a paddock and lose them.
After saying that we let our turkeys our hatch their own babies. We have one hen who is a terrible mother but she seems to be improving with age. We used to take the poults off the hens but the poults are noisy more demanding than normal chickens. Poult are only quiet when 'mum' is around. So it's either let them follow you around all day or leave them with their mother and have some peace and quiet.

All our poults are parent raised and all though we have tried the artificial incubation path it wasn't the right path for us. Totally agree with the noise it can drive you mad and it goes almost 24/7 try parent raised first and see what sort of parent the hen is.

I was hoping to let the mother hatch the eggs as I dont have the time and I like the idea of mum showing the chicks the facts of life.
Thank you for the advice

Then go down that path as I think the poults are more balanced and wise to preditors like raccoons and weasels

The preditors you have would probably do the same damage as ours so it all relative

We allow some breeds to brood their own poults but the majorities are artificially incubated with good results
