I was looking at the turkeys at the auction on Saturday and I asked an elderly chap if they made a lot of noise and he told me they were very noisy buggers. I didn't end up bidding because of his comments but now I read they aren't that bad so I am a little confused, help!!!!!

The males do gobble - but not constantly. Anything new or different will cause a gobble or two - or sometimes they just like a chat with you. We live on 100 acres in a fairly quiet location and I would estimate each gobbler would gobble no more than 10 times a day.
I just love the noises of poultry - even our noisy gunea fowl - again they can be noisy but only if alarmed by something different.

Now that is just voyeurism  privacy please

our turkeys 'gobble' abt 6 - 10 times a day when they want the girls to pay attention and almost never in the off seasons
they 'thrum' deep in their chests in the hopes of impressing them as well

OR they make a heap of racket when you shout at them - something my son does semi regularly coz he adores the sound of a humungous tom gobbling and thrumming

our back gate screeches when opened and closed and the toms go off at that = best door bell we've ever had
overall tho they are not noisy birds it does usually require something to set them off

doesnt take long for you to totally fall in love with them 'talking' tho

I dont recommend them for a suburban back yard - even tho they are Galiformes [poultry] they are not normally allowed in suburbia unless you have the land to support them - most councils require a minimum of 2 acres for Turkeys

soap box time for just a second pls = lots of dogs bark all night but you are allowed to have them in suburbia - turkeys are quiet at night yet you are not allowed to have them - - - - -
off soap box
