Post subject:  Sick turkey

Hi all
We have noticed this morning that our male turkey, 4 months old, is struggling to maintain his feet and falls backward and sits down. The breeder suggested metrazole400 as a black head fix but the vet is shut till Monday. We have seen one yellow pooh which could be his and am monitoring home in the backyard. After 3 months we moved them from turkey grower onto chook pellets and wheat to keep their size down for breeding, this was 3 to 4 weeks ago.
Any help advise appreciated.

ok, he's pretty much immobile now, propped up with towls to keep him upright. His head is still upright and very alert, eating and drinking, just not using or able to use his legs. Have tried caynee pepper which i found on the net but atm just keeping him warm and hydrated. :(

Have you tried a vitamin supplement? What does the turkeys face look like, blackhead is fairly visible.

Could it have been bitten by a snake?

Monday he got his appetite back and drank like a fish, went to the vet anyway and had a penecillin shot and an anti inflamitary. He has/was going hot and cold and has had antibiotics to take post vet visit.
Tuesday he is more lively and trying to stand, eating and drinking well.
Balance is still out and he tires quickly.
Still not sure what it is.
The breeder reckons he ate something he shouldn't, the vet reckons he's sick and has temp (not sure poison sick or flu sick)
Anyway we might be on the track to recovery wee.

Thanks for the replys, i think a snake would have knocked him off, although its a possibility.
He has not got the yellow poo's of black head.
What sort of vitamen suppliment should we try Sebducks. They are on chook pellets and wheat and grass atm with some scraps too. The day before he went down they were turning over the vegie garden with the missus.

A regular multivitamin supplement for poultry would work fine there are heaps out there to choose from. Try some scratch mix or layer mash to bulk him up a bit. He's a nice looking bird.

Wednesday has gone.
He spent most of the day in his laundry basket, no real change.
He will now stay upright for short periods of time as long as something is behind him so he does not fall backwards.
Fingers crossed for tomorrow, his undercarridge needs a clean and we are going to sling him from a tree for a while.
