Hi I have recently acquired my first turkey, a lovely big friendly 11 month old white Tom. He is so tame and loves people!I had no idea they had such awesome personalities. He is so easy to handle I am thinking about entering him in a local poultry show (once his new feathers come in as he is a bit tatty at the moment) I have no idea if he is an ok example of the breed lol but I guess I will find out. Which class would he be entered in? And does anyone have any tips for preparing them for a show? He has a girlfriend coming next weekend so I am sure he will be very happy to meet her Any help would be much appreciated

Good on you for buying a turkey Our family adores the "quirky turkey". The hardest thing about showing a turkey is finding a show that includes them on their program. I have seen turkeys shown when there was no category for them - ask the secretary/chief steward if you can enter under "Goose - AOV" or similar. Often it is a matter of pen space - turkeys need a big pen. I would encourage you to exhibit your tom, get him as confident and people friendly as you can, figure out how to protect his feathers and get him as clean as you can for the big day - then good luck! Everyone loves to see a turkey tom, especially at agricultural/general shows. If your tom gets shy at the show and puts down his feathers, consider exhibiting him as a pair (if the show program allows for this) as he might display himself better with his girlfriend next to him. |
