This may be an old question here but which is preferred for egg laying at home

a x breed
or
a pure breed

I am looking to buy chicks in spring just for home eggs but I want a reliable layer

I have pure bantams and they are not that good for egg laying but I got them to look at

Hi
I would say the best layers are Australorps. They are very easy to get. Or an Isa Brown or a Rhode Island Red.

If you only want them for eggs then a first cross would be best or Isa's but they have a much shorter life span.
But make sure they are from good laying breeds ie Australorps leghorns New Hampshire rhode islands etc not the silky cross or pekin cross as they will go broody quite often.

Hi BlueRoo & Hen [smilie=welcome.gif]

I have 4 Isa Browns as well as a couple of other purebread heritage breeds and if you want reliable egg layers you just can't go past the Isa Browns. [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

They are great layers and their egg sizes are really good and they go through a quick moult. One Con I would say is that they have a short life span 2-3 years on average.

They have beautiful little personalities as well. :-D

As a comparison, I also have a black Australorp commercial layer and 2 white Leghorn commercial layers and their eggs arent anywhere near as big as the Isa's, so if you want a good size egg then I say Isa's are your girls.

Purebred Australorps lay lovely eggs as well as Rhode Island Reds, but they go through a long moult like all of the other heritage breeds and they eat you out of house and home as they are both big girls, when they're going through their moult and not giving you any eggs. I also was looking at the Australorps and RIR's before settling on Isa's. Very happy with my choice.

Hope this gives you some food for thought. wave.gif

Cheers
Chicka-Dee
