We bought these chooks a while ago at our local Poultry Auction, the grey hen is the mother of the other 2 and we have recently started getting light blue eggs! I am trying to work out where they are coming from?

Hi Farmer Brown wave.gif

You have a mixed breeds in all of them.

No.1 I would say is an Isa Brown crossed with a Welsummer or something similar that gives you a lacing pattern on her wings.

No.2 is just a commercial Australorp. Commercial Austalorps are an Australorp which are crossed with Rhode Island Reds. In America they're called Black Star as they are easily sexed.

No. 3.....is she small like a bantum?.........as she looks likes she is a Bantum leghorn cross. Possibly crossed with a Blue Leghorn.

I don't think any have Aracuana in them.

They're def not pure breeds, just mixers, but they should give you lots of eggs as they all seem to be mixed with some firm of commercial breed.

Do you know the breeds the person you bought them off had?

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

There are also black and cuckoo coloured Araucanas, not only lavender ones.

You would have to have an Araucana gene somewhere to have a blue/green egg layer. Is the blue pigment all the way through the shell?

Yep, I agree D

I couldn't put my finger on it, but now you say OEG for no.3, I would say she is very much an OEG cross as the tail is the key indicator.

My computer didn't show the sentence at the top of your post for some reason Farmer Brown, so I didn't see that you had wrote about the blue eggs, but now I'm on my iPad it does. And if you're saying the other two are her offspring then if she has OEG in her then they will too.
