My girlfriend and I are looking for a few chickens as part of our new sustainable living project and they would need to be a good all-round fowl to suit our needs where possible. I welcome any advice or help you can offer with some breed choices

I think one of these breeds would be ideal for you

RHODE ISLAND RED
SUSSEX
MARANS

All are good layers and good eating

Thanks Looloo I do like the looks of the island red and marans so I can add those to the shorter list. Hate those sussex very plain looking chooks and uninteresting breed they all say. Are the reds and marans good layers over the winter months?

I love the Sussex's and getting the light coloured type.
Sussex's are very good layers and have a wonderful nature too and in my eyes very great looking birds, and they lay brown eggs.

Marans lay chocolate coloured eggs and a lovley type of chookie

The Sussex's and RIRs and Marans are great egg layers but all chookies are great egg layers.

There are some lovley pics around here of (not sure of the RIR's) the Marans and the Sussex's

Havent heard much good in the Natures in the RIR's

with cluckyness the best of the three is I think the Sussex.
