Hi Jaxsta, it is a shame we can't relocate some of the green jungle fowl(G.gallus) and the red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus) from the Cocos and Keeling islands which belong to Australia. These birds are spectacular and would be very much as pure as you're going to get, in particular the green jungle fowl. I think this would be the only way to secure the purity and survival of these birds in captivity and the wild as a lot of jungle fowl have been crossed in Indonesia and Thailand with village domestic poultry. I have read a government document, whereby they have written a recovery plan for the endemic Buff Banded Rail. One of the main considerations before the re-introduction of the Buff Banded Rails was to eradicate and poison the jungle fowl on these islands. It would be a pity if they did this without relocating some of these birds to dedicated aviculturists and Zoos going through the right Quarantine processes, after all, the islands belong to AUSTRALIA and it would be our most likely chance of import of these beautiful birds.

Cheers jason

G'day Jason.

It is quite unfortunate, but the island groups, although they are Australian Territories, are considered International and are still high risk zones. There are also feral populations of Red Jungle Fowl on Norfolk Island and the Capricorn Island group in the Great Barrier Reef. The Capricorn group have already been eradicated.

From what I've heard as well, whether it's a misconception, wrong or right, true or false, the only aviculturalists that can actually import birds are the pigeon breeders. Which is ironic because pigeons are one the birds that carry a high level of disease. Apparently the majority of pigeon breeders are quite well off too. You can correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I've heard and the attitude from a lot of aviculturalists.

It's ashame that Australia has a very strict and in some ways, hypocritical, Quarantine regime.

Cheers Jax

Hi Jaxsta, I do know of a breeder who is fortunate enough to have some of the original feral fowl which come from these islands of Gladstone before they were poisoned - they are a beautiful bird. They were originally collected by the new England university for research puposes. It would be nice if one of the universitys or a zoo such as Australia Zoo, which are right behind protecting endangered species, would have a look at the plight of the green jungle fowl on the Cocos Keeling islands as they are worth protecting and establishing in captivity. Where would we be now if there wern't any of the endangered Gouldian finches in captivty -they are now very well established and prolific breeders in captivty. Maybe captivity will be the only place future generations will see some of these birds in the future. Just one example of the importance of aviculture in Australia.

Cheers jason.
