Hi,

Nice new section. Perhaps this is a good place for this question.

The standard calls for reddish bay eye colour for wyandottes. I'd be interested in what other people think that means exactly.

The other thing that I'm curious about is sorghum. Many exhibition wyandotte breeders avoid feeding sorghum as it is said to lighten the eyes. Do people think this is true? If it is, then what exactly in the sorghum causes this to happen and how does it work?

Thanks.

I was reading this about Sorghum this morning on the Riverina website:

------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.riverina.com.au/website/file ... orghum.pdf
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Sorghum is mainly grown in Queensland and New South Wales for use as stock feed. Of all the grains, sorghum is the most variable in its protein and amino acid content. A protein content of 6 to 16 percent on an ‘as fed’ basis (7 to 18 percent on a dry matter basis) can occur in practice. Sorghum can be classified into two types according to the level of tannin content in the grain. Grain sorghum typically has a low tannin content.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
• Low tannin sorghum can be fed as the sole grain component to pigs and poultry of all ages. For growing meat chickens, sorghum can be used as the sole grain if the tannin content is less than 0.1% and there is adequate choline and methionine present in the diet.
• Laying hens appear to tolerate tannin levels up to 1 percent of the diet without any adverse effect on egg production.
• Sorghum varieties with high levels of tannin are very unpalatable to pigs, but specific recommendations cannot be made. The use of high tannin sorghum should be avoided if possible and those wishing to use them should seek nutritional advice.
• For best results the whole grain should be cracked or coarsely ground. Otherwise some grains will pass through the animal.
• It is recommended that sorghum be analysed for protein content to allow selection of the correct amino acid content for diet formulation.

LIMITATIONS
The tannin content of sorghum used in the diets for meat chickens must be less than 0.1 percent. This is a reasonable guide when feeding sorghum to other species also. An adequate supply of choline and methionine is required. Maximum levels of sorghum in feed will vary for each animal type and age.
DELETERIOUS SUBSTANCES
Some strains of sorghum contain high levels of tannin and are not suitable to be fed to stock.

-------------------------------------------------------------
I wonder if this means that depending on the quality of the sorghum at the time its bagged, and whether its cracked or coarsly ground it changes how much tannin is made availble to the chook? Whole sorghum may pass through more readily and the chook may be less adversly affected by tannin levels?

No idea if this is helpful or not, but I found it interesting :-D

Thanks Roova. It is interesting. I wonder if the tannin is what might affect the eye colour.

I went to the Winning Edge Poultry Seminar a couple of years ago and noted that Robert Van Barnaveld highly recommended sorghum for poultry, but it had to be broken up to help with digestion. His focus would be on commercial interests though and I'm sure colour wouldn't enter into it. I agree that it seems logical that the properties of individual batches of sorghum could make a difference.

Another wyandotte breeder than I know will only buy a feed mix that has no sorghum in it at all. I do notice that my birds don't like it whole, so I'm happy if there's no whole sorghum grains in it as well. He will also only feed vegetable proteins, no animals proteins, but that's another topic. ;)

I keep my birds right off it!

Redish bay eye is the colour of this writing

my birds keep to a mix of cracked corn (for leg colour), a comercial layer pellet, black sunflowers (very small portion, for feather condition) and wheat

everyone has a different opinionon different food stuffs and grains but you realy just have to find a mix that they like and can be source localy for a good price!

Thanks J. It's handy to know what other people are using. Ours are currently on rolled corn (it's all we could get locally), soy meal and some mixed grains. I should also think about adding a small amount of sunflower for feather condition as well.

I know a very good Wyandotte breeder up here  and he is dead against feeding sorghum . I bought a heap of cracked sorghum as it was cheap once and he saw it in the sussex pens and gave me a very stern lecture
Apparently it does weaken the eye colour .

I have also been told the same thing by a top Qld Wyandotte Breeder and a top NSW OEG Breeder.

If you have a breed that has pearl eye colour then sorghum can be fed to them.
