Hi Everyone, we thought it was about time we add a forum for "Turkeys" as they are widely kept throughout Australia. We have kept Turkeys in the past but at this time don't, but we are interested in "Bush Turkeys" if anyone has them, we would love to hear from you with info on them!

We know some of our Forum Members keep Turkeys such as Mrpeabody & Chevron 182 we would be very interested in what varieties are kept & housed ect..............

Look forward to reading the replies!

Thanks

Hi PA,
You mean the BRUSH Turkey (Alectura lathami). Great bird but can be a real menace in chook yards etc. We have three wild one's that arrived in the chook yard 2-3 years ago,one male two hens. Last year one of the hens started to build her mound in one of the chook pens --- in one day she raked up enough dirt and hay etc to cover one of the nest boxes. :!: :!: :!: It was approx 1.5 metres in diameter by the evening. As I did not want this in the pens a flattened the mound to discourage her,but the nest day she got back in and built another --- I flattened it again. This went on for a while and then I started putting food out in a small section of rainforest we have, and she went out there.

She eventually built a mound there approx 4 metres in dia. I never saw any young running around so not sure what happened, however we did find one huge egg in a chook nest box. :? :? :? The three of them were in the chook yard today, not sure if thats a good thing as far as disease etc but have no way of stopping them.

This year a Orange-footed Scrubfowl (Megapodius reinwardt) has moved into the rainforest -- hope it does not stay to long as they build a mound upto 15 metres in dia and can go as high as 5 metres-- by the time she/him has built that I'll have nothing left of the property. This bird is very nervous and hard to approa, but I have been watching it with binoculars.

All for now,regards,
Snowball :D :D :D

Hi Snowball, yep I forgot the "R" they can be quite destructive in the Garden and many people actually curse them, but they are kept in large aviaries such as Habitat (your neck of the woods - Port Douglas,Cairns) Adelaid Zoo, Melbourne Zoo ect.. with little problems, so we thought we would look into them?

Thanks for the Info, I enjoyed reading your Post above!

Thanks

Hi PA,

We have brush turkeys all over the place here at Mount Tamborine.
We see half a dozen most evenings walking through the yard o checking out the poultry runs.

They are a real nuisance in the vegetable garden ripping up all of the seedlings and will often spend hours each evening raking mulch from gardens to build up their mound. We actually had a brush turkey mound right inside our front yard but unfortunately either a wild dog or goanna dug into the mound and ate all of the eggs that were laid. The brush turkeys abandoned the nest so we won't be having baby turkeys running around the yard this year.

They can also fly really well which surprised me. They easily fly over the 1.8 metre fence that surrounds our property and will fly over the poultry run fences to scoff down all of the duck and chicken food. As a result I am having to roof all of the runs as I don't want them bring in lice. mites, ticks or any diseases.

In breeding season the males get really territorial. The dominant males get a bright red and yellow flap of skin around their neck and it is really funny to see them run from on end of our block to the other when they see another male encroaching on 'their' territory.

Wayne

Hi all, We have tracked down a bloke who breeds Brush Turkeys and have arranged for a couple of pairs. They will be housed in Large planted aviaries so they don't disapear on us. One things for shaw, they should help keep the Aviary floor clean!

Thanks for the info Wayne.

Thanks
